Seats Remaining: 11 Wilderness First Aid Course with Adult CPR ElectiveCamp Canonicus, Exeter, RI - June 19-20, 2010Table of ContentsCourse OverviewOutdoor Adventure Corps is pleased to offer the American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid (WFA) Basics course, with an elective Adult one-person CPR.
What is it?This is a nationally certified American Red Cross course. Participants successfully completing the WFA portion (16 hrs) of the course will receive certificates valid for three years. Successful participants of the CPR portion (4 hrs) will receive certificates valid for one year. Why?Outdoor Adventure Corps believes that it was important to offer this program to help youth groups provide adequate first aid coverage to their youth when they are in areas where help may be delayed (more than 30 minutes away). It provides a cost-effective means of achieving WFA certification. Taking the courses elsewhere typically costs an individual between $250-300 (with CPR certification, lodging, and meals included). This course is required for all crews (both Venturer and Boy Scout) going to Philmont Scout Reservation in New Mexico. At least one person per crew must be certified (either adult or youth). The Guide to Safe Scouting recommends this course for all groups wilderness camping. Trek Safely guidelines specifically mention it. Completion of this course (16+4 hours) satisfies the core First Aid requirements for Venturing Outdoor Bronze or the Ranger Award (note: this course does not meet the elective requirements). What topics are covered?Delayed-help situations, emergency action steps, scene assessment and management, patient assessment and records, disease transmission prevention, prioritizing care, contacting help, long term care, wounds, injuries, sudden illnesses, bites & stings, backcountry miseries, plan execution, and evacuation planning. This program expects that participants will be able to engage in moderate physical activities during simulations and drills, including two multi-casualty team drills.
