Notch 2 Notch, 2010

White Mountains, NH, August 18-21, 2010

Last year we backpacked 52 miles from Pinkham Notch through Carter and Mahoosuc Notches over to Grafton Notch in Maine. It was the backpacking highlight of the year for those attending. Come join nine others this year as we traverse from Crawford Notch over to Franconia Notch. This is a hut-to-hut trek, so the load on your back will be light and the lodging warm and comfortable. This trip costs $280 and includes hut accommodations (including full breakfasts and dinners), a t-shirt to commemorate the event, and help to defray travel costs.

We will stay at Zealand Hut on 8/18, Galehead Hut on 8/19, and Greenleaf Hut on 8/20. We will complete the trip on Saturday, August 21.

We must have full payment within ten days of registering for the event. Anyone not paying in full by that time will be dropped unless you've made prior arrangements with Outdoor Adventure Corps.

Participants of this Outdoor Adventure Corps event will depart at 5am (or earlier) on 8/18 from the REI parking lot in Cranston to get a good day's hike in. We'll need to station some vehicles at Franconia Notch and the rest at Crawford Notch. The current breakdown for mileage (very rounded) is:

  • First day: 8 miles
  • Second day: 6.5 miles
  • Third day: 6.5 miles
  • Fourth day: 8.1 miles

The total is closer to 27 miles. If day three looks too easy, either grab Owl's Head instead of lounging around, or come with the trip leader on a couple of spurs to bag some 4000 footers on days one and two so you can appreciate a four mile day three.

We will bag at least eight (8) 4,000' peaks. Those who are feeling frisky can bag additional peaks. The peaks along the AT everyone should bag include:

  • First day: None
  • Second day: Zealand [4260], Guyot* [4580], & South Twin [4902]
  • Third day: Galehead [4024] (<1/2 mile off trail), Garfield [4500], Lafayette [5260]
  • Fourth day: Lincoln [5089], Liberty [4459] (<1/4 mile off trail)

*Interestingly, though Mount Guyot is higher than West Bond and Zealand, its prominence is not adequate between Bond and South Twin to officially qualify as a 4,000'.

For the hearty, you can bag up to another nine (9) 4,000' peaks by adding a bit of mileage to your days (up to nearly ten more miles). This could bring your total official peaks to sixteen:

  • First day: Willey [4285], Field [4340], Tom [4051], <8 miles rt> & Hale*
  • Second day: Bond [4698], West Bond [4540], Bondcliff [4265], North Twin [4761]
  • Third day: None (unless you want to defer North Twin to third day)
  • Fourth day: add two miles round-trip to add Flume [4328] to your list

*Hale could be done on the second day, but after the Bonds, you'll be glad you did it on the first....

If you have any questions, please contact us.

We are also planning two shorter 3-day trips along the Appalachian Trail in CT prior to this event to get your "mountain legs" ready. One may be early July and the other may be early June/late May. Each of those trips will be ~25 miles.
