Mount Tom Hike Inspires Monthly Hiking Series

A
brisk hike along the Mount Tom Trail in Arcadia Wildlife Management Area inspires the Outdoor Adventure Corps director to offer a monthly hiking series
in the coming new year. He was accompanied by his wife and her physical therapist (who better to come along in case of injuries?). Besides hiking along
the approximately six-and-a-half mile trail, several excursions were made to find two geocaches: GCWTRW (On Top of Mount Tom) and
GCJADC (Escoheag Trail 1).
The first hike will be planned for late January or early February. After the first few warm-up hikes, we will begin the North-South trail, Rhode Island's very own border-to-border trail. Comprised of many trails and a few roads, it stretches from Charlestown Beach in the south to the Massachusetts Mid-State Trail near Wallum Lake in the north. Over
Columbus Day weekend Jim Robinson, director and founder of Outdoor Adventure Corps, completed the AT in Massachusetts. Having already completed the northern
portion, he hiked over fifty miles in the four days from County Rd. near Lee, MA down to Bear Mountain in CT.
Joining them for her maiden backpacking trip (no pun intended, of course), was the Advisor of Crew 6 Cranston. Two spry young fourteen-year-olds competed with the trek leader and his nineteen-year-old son for bragging rights to climb Mount Monroe, but all four were turned back due to ominous thunderclouds rolling in. The view in the photo is a facing southwest from Mount Franklin toward Mount Eisenhower.
Notch 2 Notch Trek, 2009 - Pinkham to Grafton via Carter and Mahoosuc Notchs

Three leaders, two young adults and two youth participated in this 52 mile trek along some of the most challenging terrain the Appalachian Trail
has to offer. The crew was undaunted by drenching rains and swollen rivers. The first night was spent in comfort at Carter Notch Hut, while the
rest were spent in shelters or tents along the way. The highlight of the trip was the one-mile Mahoosuc Notch. For the seven-day trip, the only
road crossing took place in Gorham.
Upon completing this trip, the two youth finished their requirements for the Boy Scout Backpacking Merit Badge and the Boy Scout 50-Miler Afoot/Afloat Award. They only had to do 30 miles in five days, but these young men completed 52 miles over the course of 7 days - over some of the toughest terrain in the lower 48!

Nine backpackers tackled the steep ascent of Webster Cliffs near Crawford
Notch and stayed at either Mizpah Hut or nearby Nauman Tent Site. After summitting Mount Webster and Mount Jackson (amid hail) on the first day, the
intrepid group climbed Mount Pierce (neé Clinton) and Mount Eisenhower on the second day prior to descending Crawford Path to the Highland Center.

Second Annual Wilderness First Aid and CPR Course Certifies 23 New Responders

Outdoor
Adventure Corps offered its second training class to area outdoor leaders this past weekend. Twenty-three students from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York,
New Hampshire and Rhode Island converged on Champlin Scout Reservations in Cranston, RI to prepare for a variety of summer vocations or treks where they will be
responsible for the safety and well-being of youth engaged in outdoor adventures. This year's class of 23 students included four youth and five nineteen-year-olds.
This year, two instructors - including a 17-year-old Venturer from Crew 6 Cranston (and EMT trained) - taught the course. Besides the American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid Basic course, the weekend included the Adult CPR course.
