The first hike will be planned for late January or early February. After the first few warm-up hikes, we will begin the North-South trail, Rhode Island's very own border-to-border trail. Comprised of many trails and a few roads, it stretches from Charlestown Beach in the south to the Massachusetts Mid-State Trail near Wallum Lake in the north. Joining them for her maiden backpacking trip (no pun intended, of course), was the Advisor of Crew 6 Cranston. Two spry young fourteen-year-olds competed with the trek leader and his nineteen-year-old son for bragging rights to climb Mount Monroe, but all four were turned back due to ominous thunderclouds rolling in. Upon completing this trip, the two youth finished their requirements for the Boy Scout Backpacking Merit Badge and the Boy Scout 50-Miler Afoot/Afloat Award. They only had to do 30 miles in five days, but these young men completed 52 miles over the course of 7 days - over some of the toughest terrain in the lower 48! This year, two instructors - including a 17-year-old Venturer from Crew 6 Cranston (and EMT trained) - taught the course. Besides the American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid Basic course, the weekend included the Adult CPR course. |
